Who we are
Proper Money is operated by Jamie Schmidt (“I”, “me”, “my”). I am the data controller for personal data collected through this website.
Contact: jamie@propermoney.uk
What data I collect
Depending on how you use this site, I may collect:
- Analytics data: Pages visited, time on site, device type, approximate location (country/city), browser. Collected via Google Analytics 4.
- Demographics and interests: Age range, gender, and interest categories — only if you have a Google account and have consented to this via Google Signals. See the Google Signals section below.
- Email address: If you sign up to the newsletter.
- Bank account details: Sort code and account number — only if you sign up to Easy Direct Debits via the /directdebits page. These are handled entirely by Stripe and never stored by me.
- Cookie consent preferences: Stored locally by CookieYes so the banner does not reappear on every visit.
Google Analytics 4
I use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand how people use this site — which pages are popular, where traffic comes from, and how long people spend reading. This helps me improve the content.
GA4 collects data through cookies and sends it to Google's servers. The measurement ID is G-1BRSQLQFM5.
Legal basis: Consent. GA4 only loads after you accept analytics cookies via the CookieYes banner. If you decline or have not yet responded, GA4 does not run.
Data retention: I have set GA4 data retention to 14 months within Google Analytics. You can opt out at any time by withdrawing your cookie consent.
Google's own privacy policy applies to data processed by Google: policies.google.com/privacy.
Google Signals
I use Google Signals. This is an optional GA4 feature that, when enabled, allows Google to associate your site visit with your Google account (if you are signed in and have enabled “Web & App Activity” in your Google settings).
Google Signals provides demographic and interest data — for example, age range, gender, and broad interest categories. I use this to better understand whether the content is reaching the audience it is designed for (primarily people in the UK aged 18–35 who want to improve their personal finances).
Legal basis: Consent. Google Signals data is only collected if you have accepted analytics cookies and have personalised advertising enabled in your own Google account settings.
Google Signals data is subject to Google's data policies. You can control whether Google uses your account data for this purpose via myaccount.google.com.
Stripe (Easy Direct Debits)
If you sign up to Easy Direct Debits at propermoney.uk/directdebits, payments are processed by Stripe Payments UK Ltd (FCA authorised, FRN 900461). Stripe collects your sort code, account number, and name directly. I do not receive or store this information.
Legal basis: Contract — processing is necessary to set up the direct debit you have requested.
Stripe's privacy policy: stripe.com/gb/privacy.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:
- Access the personal data I hold about you
- Have inaccurate data corrected
- Have your data erased (the ‘right to be forgotten’)
- Restrict or object to processing
- Data portability (receive your data in a portable format)
- Withdraw consent at any time, without affecting the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal
To exercise any of these rights, email jamie@propermoney.uk.
Complaints
If you have a concern about how I handle your data that I cannot resolve, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK's data protection regulator.
